What Is News Worthy?

Article #1:
The first article I chose to write about is "Doctor-assisted suicide is now responsible for one percent of all deaths in Canada". This is a very controversial issue, a lot of people agree with doctors being able to put patients out of their misery. On the other hand quite a few people do not think that it should be aloud and they think it is murder. It is all really just based on peoples opinions. Euthanasia in Canada had only became legal in June of 2016.

Timing: 3/4
The timing of this article I would say is fairly good, it was only just legalized so they couldn't just come to the conclusion that it is one percent of all deaths. They had to wait a little bit that way they could gather all the evidence.

Significance: 2/4
I do think this article has some significance, but it is not the most important thing going on in Canada today. Our country has already dealt with this issue so its not the most significant thing in the world.

Proximity: 4/4
The proximity of this article is a strong 4/4 because the article is talking about an issue that is taking place in Canada.

Prominence: 3/4
I gave this article a 3/4 for this article because it is a well known issue and there is probably a strong population of people who know someone or heard of someone passing by doctor-assisted suicide. Along with almost everyone in Canada has an opinion on the issue and knows about the issue.

Human Interest: 4/4
I would say this has a strong human interest value because it became legal not to long ago so it is still fresh in peoples minds and a lot of people may be interested in the percentage.

Article #2:

I chose the article "women are tweeting scarf selfies to condemn Quebec's Bill 62" I think this is a very important issue and this article has a lot of relevance to New Brunswick as well as Canada to a whole. This article talks about how Muslim women are not aloud to wear niqab or burqa! Which is completely unfair.

Timing: 4/4
The timing of this article is very strongly a 4/4 because this is an issue that is happening in today's world. Canadian women are dealing with this problem as we speak, right now a women could be forced off a bus etc because of what she chose to wear, which is her right!!

Significance: 3/4
This is a very big issue today, a Muslim women could not wear what she wants, she cannot put what she wants on her body if she wants to take public transport etc. Yet what would happen if a white women, with blue eyes has a scarf around her face because of the cold? Would she suffer the same repercussions? This is significant because is shows how racist Canada can be, how unfair and biased we can be.

Proximity: 4/4
This is a strong 4/4 because this is taking place is the biggest Canadian province! It is very close to where we live today, so it should be a bigger issue and more well known that what it is.

Prominence: 3/4
This issue should be a lot more well known than what it is, but just because its not as a big deal as it should be doesn't mean that nobody cares about it or that no one knows about it. This does have a lot of prominence because it stands out, women are taking action by posting selfies showing they don't support this bill. They are showing that they support equality more than discrimination.

Human Interest: 4/4
A lot of people are paying attention to this, quite a few people are interested in this issue and want to fight for what they think is right. So this is a strong 4/4!
